I want to take a moment to wish you a Happy Memorial day weekend. I hope you get to chill & Grill.
And as a daughter, Niece, and granddaughter of veterans and have many cousins in the military
a moment to Thank and remember those who served
I wanted to take this moment to help you out with some fun in the sun care.
Many think that you just put sunblock on once or twice and you’re good for the day, WRONG!
I may not burn out of the water but no matter what I put sunblock on throughout the day. While I have Neutral to
Olive tone skin, on the beach I put on at least a 30 or more block EVERY hour (one reason I likely do not burn). Now if I go in the water (which seems to be the only time I do burn) I put more on even if I applied just 5-10 minutes ago, even if I use the sport sunblock which is supposed to be waterproof. Those of you with fair skin, you need to apply at least every half hour and use the maximum SPF you can find.
Another thing is, no matter what skin you have… you need to find the BROAD SPECTRUM (which protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Think of it this way…UVB is what makes you burn, UVA is what ages your skin.
Also don’t use the stuff from a dollar store, Yeah it’s a great idea to pick up an extra in case you run out but I’d rather get another one of a trusted brand like Neutrogena, No-ad (a no frills brand), Banana Boat, or something from Hawaiian Tropic.
You don’t know what its made with, how old or effective it will be and I re-blogged this by someone last year about what happened to someone who used the dollar store brand.
I’ve herd all the beauty magazines, dermatologists etc say You are not supposed to use last summer’s sun block, and to buy a new tube really every 6 months. (If you only use it during the summer, then you are not supposed to use it the next summer as it may be ineffective in it’s job.)
For me, it depends on where I have it stored. As long as it’s away from the heaters, and not in the bathroom but in a cool dry play you may get a few more months out of it, like if you bought it at the end of the season. Also I keep my block in my purse as there are days you can just feel when the UV index is maxed.
My Sun care starts before I go in the sun, well before even going to the pool or beach or in what should be this summer’s case.. on the boat!
I not only use a loofa which many seem to think those stupid mesh shower puffs are a loofa! They are no where in the same category. A loofa is a natural sea sponge which exfoliates skin (so you get a more even tan) wash in a circular counter clock-wise motion until your skin gets a pinkish tint (almost as if you got light sun burn color.) That way you know the dead skin is off, and you will get an even tan.
I highly suggest using a loofa before you shave! It will get those hairs you can see just below the skin, but are not quite out yet. When I don’t use a loofa or pumice stone before I shave being I have dark hair it looks like I didn’t even shave!
In the 90s after I would shave I’d rub baby oil all over my legs, before drying off, then I’d rinse some of it off. They would be so soft, one of my guy friends couldn’t keep his hands off my legs. Heck when I do it now (I use the baby oil with Aloe in it) I love how soft my legs are!
Before getting out of the shower I rub some baby oil in everywhere while I still have some water on me to lock in the moisture. usually I try to make it enough (yet little) that i don’t need to rinse off. Say a quater size amount for each arm, leg and torso. If you want to use on your face just use what remains on your hands as well as rub into the backs of your hands!
My favorite POST sun beauty tip…. (I’ve done all my life)
Leave a bottle or tub of Noxema moisturizing cream in the fridge
(or if you can find it Lander original Skin Cream the label must say Cool refreshing removes oil)
We put this on us if we get a burn (after our showers) it keeps peeling to a minimum if there’s any at all.
To Prevent Sunburn
add to tub (but you should STILL use sublock)
1 TSP applecider vinegar
1 cup water
Yogurt with live cultures and NO fruit
aloe vera and Vitamin E
Smash apricot or
thin slices of cucumber will help rehydrate
Already Peeling skin?
use Witch hazel
Keep Mosquitoes Away
FRESH thyme or Basil
unscented body lotion
Honey + Ice
Baking soda + Water
I came across this Ultimate Guide to Sunscreen among my newsletters but most are expensive for the amount you get.
Here are my recommendations that EVERYONE can afford, why spend so much on sunscreen when some of us are
lucky if we get to the beach or somewhere we need it once?! (even though we all should use it before we leave the house and on the way home from work.
Here’s MY ULTIMATE guide to sunblock

Maybe if I had the 7 bags every woman should own
Maybe I wouldn’t have as many as I do. Unlike those who have the shoe fetish I don’t have an entire closet full of purses, I do have them in a bin. I don’t know how many I have exactly but I’d guess 20 of varying sizes and types. I also use some during certain times of year Like my Scorpio tote for November, some for the summer (see picture below) plus I have a few toiletry bags (of various sizes), and backpacks (depending on what I’m doing, where I’m going and my mood)
Here’s a quick shot with my Kindle of an array of my summer bags. I have 4 of the 7 types, unless you count the Pink/peach bag I use most as a small duffle. There are a couple more purses but are small and rarely used as they’d only fit a small wallet or change purse, a lip-gloss, my digi camera and my phone (if even that), though should likely be used as a gift bag (like the small drawstring with the shells on it.) Also have 2 waterproof dry paks which will definitely be worth the purchase this summer as I’m supposed to go on a neighbor’s boat. (hanging out while he and dad fish, I might do a bit but get bored quick so a small book to read, a pen and journal, maybe one of the kindles for weather and tide updates.
One is a Multi-purpose nylon bag you can put your clothes and even some emergency items in case the boat runs out of gas, or something.
the other is a ‘wallet‘ (great for the beach when you just come in from swimming and want to get something at the food stand)
the one in the top right that’s kind of peach and pink I use most and was a find at a thrift store. I couldn’t believe I found something American Eagle at a thrift store! The one in the middle with happy bunny says ‘Reduce Global Warming…buy me ice cream” I use that as a beach tote (also have another beach tote that’s long instead of wide like that one. Its from Del*Sol where I think everything changes color in the sun. There used to be a shop in Cape May and I tried a polish or 2 and they really do change color. Sadly the shop is no longer there so I will soon have to order online for some polishes. (I just hope what I have will last me a bit longer. as I think the polishes were $8- $10 when I was there, so not sure how much now.) The one on the far left that’s black and White the inside is vinyl so it’s ‘waterproof’ and has three pockets in the black area for easy access for chapstick and anything else you need to get to quick and small.
The small 2 tone blue is a Steve Madden I got (well forget the name of the store) but everything was always half off or more it’s a small hand bag, (wish the straps were a little bigger so I could at least put my hand through it to hold)
The blue tote i got years ago from Target for I thin $1-$2 it has Hibiscus on it. They had red or blue and the blue looked best. The toiletry bag in that I think was from Avon. On the right the bag on the chain, I got that in the thrift store I just liked that it was different. Though they made it goofy, where they put the tabs for the chains (You can see where it pulls) I usually find the purse beside me laying flat as if it’s an arm rest! Sadly as much as I’d like to fix that, I would have to rip the whole thing apart. So if I find a way to remove the tabs so that it doesn’t damage the rest of the stitching and find a way to move them or a new way to include the chain (which would likely get to hot in the summer) I may have to end up just using it as a clutch.
I may have to get rid of a few things this summer if I find something new as the handles are fraying on that pink/peach one I use most.(I do need to iron it, as I swear they used to much fabric on the inside and I can’t find my stuff half the time!
Now to just be able o sort my fall/winter ones out like this as there’s some in the bin, one the closet door, and hung some on the hooks in back of closet.
and Long of it
or the middle of it
